Some Utilities charge startup or setup fees associated with reading your meter, so be sure to check the facts label carefully anytime you are switching or signing up with a new provider.

You may be subject to a cancellation fee if you change your provider before the end date of your contract. However, you can set a switch date within 14 days before the end of your contract end date without early termination penalty. That’s Texas Law.

Fixed pricing allows you to lock in the rate you pay for electricity with a contract for a given time period, usually 3–60 months (depending on your selection). Variable pricing, also known as month-to-month pricing, may fluctuate with the energy markets. There is no contract in a variable plan. Your pricing could go up, stay the same, or even go lower, all of which is out of your control and is determined by the energy company offering the variable plan.

In Texas, there are laws to protect you from this and you are not be subject to a cancellation fee if you legitimately move from your home. Anytime you move, you should use that opportunity to shop again for a better plan – even I you are in a contract. You do NOT have to transfer your service – that’s Texas Law.

This is perhaps the most important consideration in comparing your power company choices. Many providers charge fees in addition to usage charges. Sometimes referred to as Base Charges or Minimum Usage Charges, these can greatly affect the pricing you see on your bill, particularly if you use less than 1000kwh per month. Check your recent bills and use Top Choice Energy Energy to compare plan pricing that matches your usage. The best way to see the real price you pay currently? Take the total Dollar Amount due, and divide it by the total KWH usage you had that month. This will give you the same pricing we list here at Top Choice Energy Energy… the all-in, true-cost pricing that you’ll actually see when the bill is due.

Before Top Choice Energy Energy, all of us had to spend a lot of time searching calling and clicking around, reading through lots of Energy Facts Labels, if we wanted to see the true-cost pricing for our usage level. We’ve solved that issue for you by ensuring all providers displayed accurately represent their pricing at 500,1000, and 2000kwh usage levels. It’s our way of putting all the providers on a level playing field, where they compete on things that matter most, like pricing, term lengths, and renewable content. No hidden fees allowed at Top Choice Energy Energy.

Top Choice Energy is a free consumer service. Energy companies we show or review pay us a fee when we help them enroll customers, but you’ll never pay anything, and the pricing you see on our site is the same as you can get from the providers directly.

Unfortunately, no. Several states have opened the doors to open competition in the energy markets serving their residents, but many have not. And to make matters even more confusing, some cities within deregulated states aren’t deregulated at all. To find out if you have the power to choose your electricity and/or natural gas provider, simply enter your zip code and we’ll show you your options.

We are very picky about who we partner with. The energy industry is full of enough nonsense as it is. The providers you see on our site went through a rigorous vetting process. If you can’t find a particular brand on our site it is likely they didn’t meet our standards. But, we do add new providers regularly. So if you don’t see them today, they could be added in the future.

There are several different types of electricity companies in Texas. Utilities are in charge of the operation and maintenance of the energy grid. They care for power lines and other hardware that delivers power to your home or business. The major utilities serving the state of Texas include Oncor and Centerpoint Energy.

An Electricity Facts Label (EFL) provides details about a specific electricity plan so consumers can easily compare offers from different electricity providers, much like a nutrition label on food allows consumers to compare food choices. EFLs are required for all residential electricity plans in Texas. Some other states in deregulated areas may have some form of EFL as well.

Many factors play a part in your final decision when shopping for an electricity plan. Maybe you want green, maybe not. Maybe you want a supplier that you have used before. Maybe you just want the cheapest electricity rate available.

Whatever the case we will help you find the best option for you by linking to your utility data, this will help us find the best plans for you. Then you can filter and sort by term length, provider, renewable, and other factors you might be considering.

And, if you still need help our U.S.A-based support team is here to help you find the perfect plan for your home or business.

ESID stands for Electricity Services Identifier. Your ESID Number (pronounced “Easy I.D.”), is a unique number to your property address. It helps Texas electricity companies easily enroll customers, switch energy providers, and meter your energy consumption. It is sometimes referred to as an ESIID, ESI ID, or ESI-ID.

Think of it as a social security number for your electric meter. It’s not visible on your meter, but you can find it on your bill or by contacting your local utility company

Before you choose a new electric provider to inquire about plans, contact your current electric provider and ask for your current plan’s total electric rate per “kilowatt hour” (kWh) based on a 1,000 kWh average usage (not including taxes or non-recurring fees). This will help you compare plans based on price.

To make the best apples-to-apples comparison of providers and offers, you should ask the following questions:

1. What will I pay per “kilowatt hour” (kWh) of electricity based on 1,000 kWh of average monthly usage?
2. Does this rate include everything, including the electricity cost, the transmission and distribution charges, as well as any monthly customer charges or other recurring fees?
3. Is this offer a fixed rate offer, a variable rate offer, or an indexed offer? If it is a variable or indexed rate offer, how can it change? How do I find out when and by how much the rate will change?
4. Is there a contract? If so, how long is it for?
5. Is a deposit required? If so, how much?
6. What are my payment options?
7. What happens when my contract expires?
8. What if I miss a payment?
9. Is there a penalty if I break the contract?
10. If I generate excess renewable electricity, does your company have a buy-back plan? What are the terms?
